Author Spotlight - Wednesday, July 6, 11:00 am - Library of Congress - Madison Building (No reservation required)

The Library of Congress LGBTQI Group - LC-GLOBE - has invited four GCLS authors to do an Author Spotlight at the Library of Congress on Wednesday, July 6th at 11:00 am.

Jewelle Gomez, Melissa Brayden, Ann McMan and Marie Castle will be representing our GCLS authors at this event.

This event is FREE and open to the public!  There is unlimited seating.  You do NOT need to register or sign up. You just need to get there. Those attending should have no difficulty making it back to the hotel in time for the 1:00 pm Conference Opening.

The readings will take place at 11:00 am until Noon at the Library of Congress in the Madison Building, Room LM-139. This is located at 101 Independence Ave, SE.

Please note that the Library of Congress is part of the Capitol complex and all visitors must clear security (fairly similar to airport security) prior to entering the buildings.

There are multiple options for traveling to the Library of Congress:

  • Taxi:  Go out the main doors of the hotel and let the Valets know that you need a cab.  There are many cabs waiting at the hotel for folks just like you! :-)  The Valets will wave a cab over and you're on your way!
  • Uber: Download the Uber app to your smartphone and set up a ride!
  • Metro: This is probably the most economical way to travel, but may take the longest. Especially considering the delays from the various construction projects that are going on.
    • The hotel shuttle will drop you off at the Pentagon City Metro stop.
    • Take the BLUE line toward Largo Town Center.
    • Exit at CAPITAL SOUTH.
    • When you come out of the Metro, just walk north on 1st St, SE (the Madison Building is on your right), turn right on Independence Avenue, and enter the Madison Building.
    • Go through Security and make your way to LM-139.
    • More Metro information is available at http://www.wmata.com/.

  • Car: If traveling by personal car, it might be best to use Google Maps or Map Quest plan your route in advance.  Our Library of Congress representative, Cathi Jones (a GCLS Member) from LC-GLOBE, has arranged for the owner (Abel) of the garage where she usually parks to reserve parking spaces for the group. The garage is 2 blocks south of the Library of Congress Madison Building at 412 1st ST, SE in a building rather blandly named “Capitol Hill Office Building” next to the Bullfeathers restaurant. Garage cost is $14.00. If you are coming by car, please let Cathi know in advance (vcjones@crs.loc.gov; (202) 707-7823 or (202) 321-5236) so that she can let him know how many spaces to reserve for us. When you park, give Abel Cathi Jones' name and he will take care of you. Make sure to give him a big “thank you” as well!
