The Golden Crown Literary Society Applauds the U.S. Supreme Court's Ruling on Marriage Equality

DALLAS – On Friday, June 26, 2015, the U.S. Supreme court ruled 5 to 4 in support of marriage equality. This decision will provide same-sex couples throughout the United States the same legal rights and protections as heterosexual couples.

This ruling will afford same-sex couples access to all of the same benefits that heterosexual couples have long enjoyed, including, but not limited to, hospital visitation, insurance and retirement benefits, family and medical leave, inheritance rights, and family health care coverage.

Golden Crown Literary Society Executive Director Elizabeth Gibson released the following statement.

“The Golden Crown Literary Society is not, by definition, a political organization.  However, by our very nature, we cannot help but be affected by political actions and discriminatory beliefs by members of society.  June 26, 2015 was a momentous day for the advancement of equal rights - not special rights, just equal rights. We work hard all our lives. We pay our taxes, we obey the law, we volunteer, we save lives, we teach, we make a difference. Yet, we did not receive the same benefits as the rest of society, such as shared pensions, shared healthcare programs, spousal immigration rights, and more.  We have only ever asked to be given the same respect, and yes, rights, afforded to most other Americans.

We applaud and thank SCOTUS for recognizing the inequality that exists in society and for taking the first step towards correcting a discriminatory societal 'norm' that has gone on far too long.

As writers and readers, these changes will be recorded in our writings for years to come.  For writers, it is our job to record history - in both fiction and non-fiction.  As we begin to feel safer in our society, become free from persecution and harassment, more stories will be told, more history/herstory shared, and our truths will unfold.  There has been a collective shift in our universe today, and it will be reflected in our literature.”

The Golden Crown Literary Society (GCLS) is a 501(c)3 non-profit, volunteer organization whose mission is education and the promotion and recognition of lesbian literature. Our mission is to provide educational opportunities to new and established authors for developing their craft, and to promote and recognize quality in Lesbian Literature.
