2021 Special Guests
Emma DonoghueMs. Donoghue is the 2008 Goldie Award Winner for her novel, Landing. Her 2010 novel Room was a finalist for the Man Booker, Commonwealth and Orange Prize and later made into an Academy Award-winning movie, for which Ms. Donoghue was nominated for her screenplay. Her timely July 2020 release, The Pull of the Stars, takes place in a Dublin, Ireland, maternity ward at the height of the Great Flu in 1918. The Pull of the Stars has received rave reviews. "Donoghue's best novel since Room." (Kirkus Reviews) “Donoghue offers vivid characters and a gripping portrait of a world beset by a pandemic and political uncertainty. A fascinating read in these difficult times." (Booklist) Ms. Donoghue will discuss The Pull of the Stars during a session with conference attendees on Saturday, July 10th, 2021, at 2:00 PM EST. About the author: Born in Dublin in 1969, Emma Donoghue is an Irish emigrant twice over. She received her PhD in eighteenth-century literature from the University of Cambridge before moving to London, Ontario, where she lives with her partner and their two children. She migrates between genres, writing literary history, biography, stage and radio plays, fairy tales and short stories. Donoghue’s other critically acclaimed novels range from the historical (Frog Music, Slammerkin, Life Mask, The Sealed Letter) to the contemporary (Stir-Fry, Hood, Landing).
