From the Executive Director's Desk
THANK YOU ALL!
On behalf of the Board of Directors we thank you all for your contribution to the GCLS Fall Fundraiser. You heard the voice and answered the call. We not only met our goal of $12,000 but exceeded the goal by $3000. Your donations will help us continue our mission of increasing the integrity of literature about women loving women.
On other news fronts, the GCLS's fresh, new website is well under way in development. Our goal is to "go live" and launch in the first quarter. It is updated, modern, colorful, and easy to navigate. We will also be refreshing all our print materials and online templates. Exciting times!
Your board is deep in the throes of planning the 2019 conference in Pittsburgh. Be sure to register for the conference and reserve your hotel room. There are so many fun, educational and interesting things to do and see in Pittsburgh. We hope to have a reading at Carnegie Library.
As always feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any suggestions, questions or comments.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
A Note from Carleen Spry
It was six years ago this month that I was contacted by the (then) Executive Director of GCLS and asked to serve on the Board of Directors. It was a 2-year term that could be renewed if I did a good job. My term was renewed twice. According to our bylaws, I’ve now reached my term limit. I must step down from the Board of Directors. Therefore, January 31, 2019, will be my last day as a member of the Board.
I’ve been honored and privileged to serve this organization for the past six years. Quite honestly, it’s been a major lifeline for me. I’ve met so many of you during my tenure and can now call so many of you friends. That is the greatest reward I could possibly imagine. You all inspire me and make me happy. I love going to conferences and events throughout the year because of YOU. Because I get to see my friends. Thank you for being my friends.
While I will no longer be a member of the Board, I’m not going away. I’m still a volunteer, as I have been since 2011. Many of the day-to-day tasks I’ve managed over the years will still be my responsibility. I’m still the person to contact if you’re having trouble registering for the conference. I’m still the person who will email you if we need more information for your registration or your headshot and/or bio for the program (authors). I’ll still be the person you’ll send your silent auction donations and tote bag promo items to. And I’m still helping to usher in our new and improved website (forthcoming). I’ll be the person configuring our new event app for the conference. (Yes! A real app. One that’s integrated and interactive. Be excited!) So, yeah, I ain’t goin’ nowheres. (I’m from the southside of Chicago…just go with it.)
Since I won’t have “Board duties” during the conference in Pittsburgh, expect to see me at more panels and presentations, as an attendee. So, let’s do lunch! Let’s get a drink! Let’s have a dance! Most of all, let’s just hug each other for 5 days!
I shall miss the other women on the Board. I mean, not completely. They are still my friends and I’m still going to work with them on projects as my volunteer time is needed. But I really will miss our monthly Board meetings. They’re jam-packed with work and debates and voting, but they are also overflowing in laughter and friendship and love. Yeah. I’ll miss those meetings.
Mary, Ann R., Sandy, Cheryl, Beth, Suzie, Cris, Maria, Anne G., Sallyanne. It’s been such an honor and a pleasure to work with you all. You know how to find me if you need anything.
Hugs & Hickies & Stuff,
GCLS is Coming to a Town Near You

2019-2020 Writing Academy Scholarship Opportunities
The GCLS is now accepting applications for two of its annual scholarships, the Bridge-Builder Scholarship, and the Sandra Moran Scholarship, which cover tuition to the organization’s Writing Academy program.
The GCLS Writing Academy is a year-long intensive program for new or relatively new writers who have written at least part of a novel. In this course, students will learn the critical components of quality writing. The Writing Academy goes beyond the craft of writing and takes students through all aspects of writing and publishing a novel.
The Bridge-Builder Scholarship is offered to a young (age 18-30) woman writer of color who shows talent and drive in creating lesbian-themed literature. The writer should be interested in working on a full-length novel or a collection of short stories. One recipient will receive full tuition to the 2019 GCLS Writing Academy and one-on-one mentoring with a well-established lesbian fiction writer, with an estimated value of $995.
The Sandra Moran Scholarship is awarded to one GCLS Writing Academy student each year. One qualified recipient will receive full tuition to the GCLS Writing Academy, with an estimated value of $995. Applicants for the Sandra Moran Scholarship must submit an application to the Writing Academy and be accepted into the program first. The scholarship recipient will be expected to complete the program, as well as give back to the literary community.
